PRESS RELEASE

During the current “Survey” debate, we have heard much from the Far Christian Right and the Middle church on the No Campaign, and a repressed, but thankfully a larger support from more conservative churches for the Yes campaign. There are, however, very few Churches in Australia, that have the LGBTQI at their core. MCC Melbourne has been a part of our ‘community’ in Melbourne for over forty years, and is part of a global church, UFMCC (Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches) with churches in Sydney and Brisbane as well. MCC Melbourne continues to support the spirituality of our ‘Community’ and allies. We already serve our ‘Community’ with Baptisms, Funerals and  Commitment Ceremonies, and soon we hope Weddings! But as a minority within a minority, we sometimes suffer at the voices of intolerance. The experience of last Sunday at MCC Sydney is shared below:

Yes, Jesus Loves Me

MCC Sydney is a safe place to come and worship God.

It’s inclusive. It’s accepting.

Anyone that knows me, knows it’s my church and that I love both it and those that attend. It doesn’t ask you to justify why you are there. Nor what you believe in. It wants simply to create a place whereby you are free to be in a public place with your God.

Last night at church we had a few new people come. They were welcomed in the usual way. During announcements, one of our welcomed new people decided to stand up in a most confronting way and tell us that we needed to ‘repent for your sins’. What triggered the outburst was nothing more than MCC gathering in the worship of God. Worshiping God is not something we usually associate with ‘falling short’ and demanding repentance for.

That said, it happened.

It was loud. It was intrusive. It was confronting. It was very real.

He was gently but firmly escorted off the premises very quickly and the whole incident was over in less than a minute. But, it changed the nature of the service. The person at the pulpit immediately spoke of ‘loving everyone.’ One of the worship leaders led us in a simple rendition of ‘Yes, Jesus loves me.’ The preacher changed his sermon on the fly. The incident changed the service.

But God was in the House!

God is always in the House!

And no matter what anyone ever tries to tell you, God loves you right now. God has always loved you. And God will always, always love you.

Blessings to all who attend, love and support MCC churches around the world and last night in particular to those there at MCC Sydney.
